Coaching matters.
Historically, the NFL’s Coach of the Year award has not always gone to the coach of the team with the best record. It typically rewards the coach who exceeds preseason expectations, engineers a major turnaround or takes a franchise to the next level.

What To Know: John Harbaugh opened the season as the +600 favorite to win the award, and after five weeks and some shifts in the odds, he’s back to that number. The Giants are 3-1-1 and atop the NFC East standings, all after losing starting quarterback Jaxson Dart for the season early in Week 2. Two of New York’s wins, however, have come at home against Tennessee and Arizona.
What To Know: The Vikings are the surprise of the season so far, sitting at 5-0. Minnesota has arguably the best defense in the NFL, allowing 12.8 points per game (first) and 259.8 total yards per game (second).
What To Know: Conventional wisdom would likely say the 49ers are the best team in the league through five weeks. They are 5-0 and have wins over both the Rams, Broncos and Seahawks. QB Brock Purdy is playing at an MVP level so far (13 TDs, two INTs), and San Francisco is third in both points per game (30.8) and points allowed (18.6).
What To Know: Johnson was atop the board last week, but the Bears have begun to struggle in the absence of Caleb Williams. They beat both the Eagles and Jets without Williams under center, but were blown out by the Packers in Week 5. Still, Chicago is the No. 1 rushing team in the league, putting up 173.2 yards per game.
What To Know: The Raiders started off 3-0, but those wins came over the Dolphins, Chargers and Saints. Las Vegas has lost its last two to the Chiefs and Patriots, and it faces the Bills and Rams over the next two weeks.
