Patrick Kane’s Blackhawks return must be more than a homecoming story

Patrick Kane is back where his NHL career began, and nobody needs to pretend the reunion is anything short of fascinating.

Kane returning to the Chicago Blackhawks brings back memories of Stanley Cups, unforgettable playoff goals and a stretch when Chicago owned the hockey world. His first game back at the United Center should be emotional. The ovation may shake a few loose screws in the building.

Then the puck will drop.

Once that happens, Kane’s return must become about what he can still provide rather than everything he previously accomplished. The Blackhawks signed him to a two-year contract carrying an $8 million salary-cap hit. That is not a ceremonial deal given to a franchise legend so everyone can feel warm for a few months. Chicago is paying Kane to help move its rebuild forward.

Patrick Kane can give Connor Bedard something Chicago has lacked

The Blackhawks have spent three seasons surrounding Connor Bedard with young players and temporary veterans. Kane offers something different.

He understands the pressure of becoming the face of hockey in Chicago. He knows what it feels like to have every mistake dissected and every losing streak treated like a citywide emergency. Bedard does not need Kane to arrive and take over the team, but having someone around who has already survived that experience could be invaluable.

Kane can also help on the ice. His vision and passing ability remain valuable, particularly on the power play. Putting him alongside Bedard gives Chicago two players capable of creating scoring chances before the defense realizes what has happened.

There will be questions about whether the two need the puck too much to share a line consistently. That is a fair concern. It is also the sort of problem a rebuilding team should be delighted to have.

Chicago cannot allow nostalgia to control the plan

The danger is obvious. Kane’s history with the Blackhawks could make it difficult for the organization to treat him like any other player.

Chicago cannot hand him unlimited minutes because of the name on his jersey. If Kane struggles, his role should change. If a younger player earns additional opportunities, the coaching staff cannot allow sentiment to get in the way.

The same applies to expectations. Kane does not need to recreate his prime years or carry Chicago back into championship contention by himself. Those days are gone, along with half the jerseys people will dig out of their closets for opening night.

What he can do is make the offense more dangerous, support Bedard and show Chicago’s young players what preparation looks like from someone who has accomplished nearly everything possible in the sport.

Kane’s return should be celebrated. He earned that reception long ago.

But once the applause ends, the Blackhawks need him to be more than a reminder of what they used to be. They need him to help build what comes next.
