A two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion with 762 career starts, Kyle Busch was a legend of the sport. His 234 wins across all three national divisions put him in a class of his own. Along with being one of top ten winningest drivers in Cup Series history, no driver comes close to his level of his success in the O’Reilly and Truck Series.
Busch died of a pneumonia that progressed into sepsis, leaving behind wife Samantha, 11-year-old son racer Brexton, 4-year-old daughter, Lennix, brother Kurt and both of his parents.
The reaction from the motorsports community has been one of shock, as Busch was racing — and winning — just last weekend, earning his 69th career Truck victory at Dover Motor Speedway.
After his 234th and final win last weekend, Busch said it was special “because you never know when the last one is.”
Here’s a collection of just SOME of the reactions and tributes from around the racing world:
NASCAR drivers, crew chiefs, teams, and others
Dale Earnhardt Jr.: “Kyle and I had a really challenging existence for many years. But we luckily took the time to figure out our differences and that was something he instigated with a conversation in his bus around how we each managed our racing teams. I was super eager for us to get on better terms. But it was he who made the effort for that to be possible. We did some media together also to laugh through some of the things we put each other through many years ago. Most recently we had even been discussing him running my Late Model at Wilkesboro this summer. He seemed extremely happy and we had planned to meet up next Thursday to get his seat to the shop. He laughed over the idea of his fans and JRM fans having to cheer in unison during that race. Kyle was one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history. No one can deny that. But he was also a father, a husband, brother, son, and a friend to many. My heart is broken for the Busch family. I will never be able to make sense of this loss but I am thankful that we had found a way to become friends.”
Jeff Gordon: “This is a devastating loss and one that is hard for the NASCAR community to process. Kyle was a fierce competitor who demanded the very best from himself each time he put on the helmet. As teammates, I saw firsthand the passion and intensity he brought to the sport every single day. He was a champion and prolific racer who made a tremendous impact on NASCAR and was a lifelong advocate for all forms of motor sports. But beyond the track, he loved his family deeply and was incredibly proud of Samantha, Brexton and Lennix. My thoughts are with the entire Busch family during this extremely difficult time.”
Jimmie Johnson: “Kyle Busch wasn’t just one of the fiercest competitors our sport has ever seen, he was one of the most talented race car drivers I’ve ever shared a track with. We spent years as teammates at Hendrick Motorsports, and even as competitors, there was always a deep respect for what he could do behind the wheel. Kyle pushed all of us to be better. His passion, intensity, and love for racing were unmatched, and his impact on this sport will be felt forever. I’ll always remember the many laughs and conversations away from the spotlight, and most importantly the way he cared so deeply about his family. My heart goes out to Samantha, Brexton, Lennix, Kurt, his parents, many teammates across the industry, fans and everyone who loved Kyle. NASCAR lost one of its greatest talents today, and we’ve all lost a friend.”
Kevin Harvick: “Kyle Busch and I spent years pushing each other to the limit.
We raced hard, traded paint and fought for every inch because all either of us wanted to do was beat the other. What people may not realize is how much that rivalry drove us both. Kyle made me better because you had to be at your absolute best to beat him. Over time, that fierce competition turned into a mutual respect. As our careers evolved, so did our conversations. We talked over building race teams, life beyond the racetrack, and our families, especially raising young sons who want to be racers themselves. I’m deeply saddened for Samantha, Brexton and Lennix. There’s nothing that can replace a husband or a father. I’m also saddened for our sport. NASCAR lost one of its true giants, whose impact is almost beyond measure.”
Ryan Blaney: “There never has been and never will be another racer like Kyle Busch. The most talented, relentless and smartest person to have sat behind the wheel. I was in awe growing up and seeing the absolute dominance of someone every week. I was lucky to have raced with Kyle in late models, trucks, Nationwide, cup and no one would make you feel like you had so little talent because he could do things that just seemed impossible to do, but it was normal to him. Getting to know Kyle over the years, I got the chance to experience how incredibly funny and charismatic his personality was. I truly believe Kyle is the greatest driver that our sport has ever seen. And we were lucky to witness it, whether you’re a fan or competitor. My heart is broken for Samantha, Brexton and Lennix. Rowdy will forever be a part of our lives.”
Tony Stewart: “Kyle Busch was a fierce competitor. He was strong-willed, confident not only in his ability behind the wheel, but in his opinions. He held his own and didn’t mince words. Early on, we didn’t always see eye to eye, but in 2008, he became my teammate at Joe Gibbs Racing… and he was a great teammate. He pushed me to be better, and we always had respect for one another. It was easy to see that Kyle was going to be a future champion. What a loss for the NASCAR community and the motorsports community as a whole. Kyle was one of a kind. Whether it was to see him win or to see someone beat him, you watched. Even the haters will miss Kyle. They’ll learn in the coming weeks who he was as a person, a husband and a father. My heart goes out to his wife, Samantha, his kids Brexton and Lennix, his parents Tom and Gaye, and to his brother Kurt.”
Danica Patrick: “I think that we’re all just shocked. We’re sad. It’s just something that no one expected. When I first heard something was wrong, I thought he was driving something, but it was something completely different. Love him or hate him, Kyle Busch was a figure, he was a polarizing figure and he was an incredible driver that will go down as being one of the greatest NASCAR drivers ever. That’s a loss in another way, too. I get asked, like, ‘What does it take to be a great driver?’ And many times I’ve referred to this scenario and Kyle Busch has always been in my mind as the driver that does this the best. But when a driver is out there on track, this is almost like an altered state of focus. The drivers that could access that next level of like, go mode were able to be the best drivers. In my mind I was thinking about him, but he was able to get to that next level so often. He was just incredibly fast and incredibly passionate and always wanted to be the best.”
Denny Hamlin: “We’ve lost our Kobe Bryant … Absolutely cannot comprehend this news. We just need to think of his family during this time. We love you KB.”
Brad Keselowski: “Absolute shock. Very hard to process. Hug your loved ones”
Mark Martin: “I’m in shock and (am) speechless … I am so sorry about this. It drags my the pain I felt in 1998 when I unexpectedly lost my Dad, Sarah and Shelly. I am extremely grateful for the relationship Kyle and I had. He treated me like gold. Showed me respect beyond belief. I wish I could do something to help everyone.”
Ricky Stenhouse Jr.: “There aren’t really words for today. I’ve raced against Kyle for a long time, and anyone who’s lined up next to him knows exactly what made him special, he gave you everything he had, every single lap, and he made all of us better for it. But more than the wins and the records, I keep thinking about Samantha, Brexton, and Lennix, and the entire Busch family right now. That’s where my heart is. Rest easy, Rowdy. The sport won’t be the same without you.”
Ross Chastain: “He was my hero … Incredibly sad, unbelievable, honestly. He’s eight-ish years older than me, and to think that he’s gone is still unbelievable, almost one day later.”
Connor Zilisch: “At a loss for words. Thinking and praying for the entire Busch family. Godspeed my friend.”
AJ Allmendinger: “In shock, absolutely heartbroken and saddened for the loss of Kyle Busch. More importantly thinking of Samantha and his entire family. KB is one of the best to ever do it.”
Chris Buescher: “It doesn’t seem real. Just heartbroken with news of kb. I was privileged to be able to race and battle with him through all of my nascar career in both series. I watched him take wins away from my favorite drivers growing up to getting to race door to door…and trade paint on my own with him. He was the definition of a racer, and his impact and legacy will be part of our sport forever. Everyone continue to keep the entire Busch family in your prayers.”
Tyler Gibbs, president of Toyota USA: “Kyle was an incredible champion who demanded perfection every single day due to his deep desire to win. Kyle and Toyota were synonymous with winning for 15 years, with countless record-breaking milestones, race victories and multiple championships celebrated together. While there were many exciting moments spent in victory lane, Kyle’s personal relationship with the entire Toyota family was even more memorable. His impact on NASCAR and the whole motorsports community cannot be measured. Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with Samantha, Brexton, Lennix and the entire Busch family during this difficult time.”
Mark Reuss, president of General Motors: “The shocking news of Kyle’s passing is devastating to me, and to everyone at Chevrolet and General Motors. Our hearts go out to Samantha, their children Brexton and Lennix and the Busch family, everyone at RCR, Kyle’s legions of fans and all of Rowdy Nation. He was a fierce competitor who found success both as a driver and team owner, as well as a generous benefactor to countless families with the Bundle of Joy Fund he founded with his wife, Samantha. On top of all that, he found time to be a true friend to us all.”
Ford Racing: “Our hearts go out to Kyle’s family. Kyle had a massive impact on our community as a fierce competitor and as a friend. His contributions to the sport were immeasurable. Our prayers go out to Samantha, their children and the entire Busch family, as well as Richard Childress Racing, the NASCAR community and Kyle’s many friends and fans. A legend and champion forever.”
Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports: “This is an incredibly painful shock for all of us and a heartbreaking loss for the NASCAR family. Kyle was one of the most talented drivers I’ve ever seen and a racer in the truest sense of the word. He had a fire and competitive spirit that drove him to be great. I watched Kyle grow up in this sport and valued the friendship we shared long after he drove for our organization. As much as he loved to drive a race car, nothing brought him more joy than being a husband, a father and watching his son race. On behalf of everyone at Hendrick Motorsports, our hearts are with Samantha, Brexton, Lennix, Kurt and the Busch family.”
23XI Racing: “We are heartbroken by the sudden loss of Kyle and our condolences go out to Samantha, their kids, Kurt, and the entire Busch family. We also extend our thoughts and prayers to the racing family at Richard Childress Racing. Kyle was a one of a kind competitor who always raced with grit and determination. His impact on NASCAR helped grow the sport immensely and he will be sorely missed.”
Bubba Wallace: “My eyes hurt from all the crying, my heart hurts from the pain. Just Sunday, mid race I thought about Kyle Busch and the one of many lessons that he had taught me. ‘Is it loose? Drive thru it and trust it’ Kyle was a monumental factor in who Bubba Wallace is today. I sit here and look at all things around me and all the things I’ve been able to accomplish..Kyle played a role in every aspect. That’s what hurts the most. An icon and a legend that I looked up to…is no longer with us. Myself along with many other drivers, crew chiefs, mechanics, etc… learned so much from Kyle. His legacy will continue to transcend in this sport for years to come. Honored to have shared the same racetrack with one of the best to ever do it. Thank you for all you’ve done for me. I will miss my drafting buddy on the plate races. Rest easy my brother. Love to you and your family!”
Terry Labonte: “My family and I extend our deepest condolences to the Busch family as we join them in mourning the loss of Kyle. The moment he stepped into NASCAR, we all knew we were witnessing something great. Kyle was an incredible driver, competitor, and voice in our sport. Our prayers are with his family, friends and fans.”
Team Penske: “We’re incredibly saddened to learn about the unexpected passing of Kyle Busch. A tenacious competitor, his talent and relentless drive helped elevate NASCAR at every level. We had great respect for the intensity he brought to the sport. Our heartfelt condolences are with the Busch family, his friends and the entire motorsports community.”
JR Motorsports: “On the track, Kyle was a tremendous and fierce competitor. Racing against him week in and week out on Saturdays was an honor for us. Off the track, he was a devoted husband and father. Kyle’s love for his family was second to none. We send our deepest condolences and our love to Samantha, Brexton, Lennix, and the entire Busch family.”

Trackhouse Racing: People like Kyle drove the inspiration for a company like Trackhouse to exist. The spectacular moments he gave all of us just fed the desire to make NASCAR a bigger part of our lives. His indeliable mark on this sport will echo in the future generations of drivers that dream of doing it like Kyle did. Our sincere condolences go out to Samantha, Brexton, Lennix, and the entire Busch family.
John-Hunter Nemechek: “It’s hard to put into words what Kyle Busch has meant to me throughout my life and my career. From the time I was young, Kyle believed in me, gave me opportunities, pushed me to be better, we had so many hard fought battles, and always someone I could lean on. He’s been more than a mentor to me. He’s been a longtime friend and someone l’ve looked up to for so many years. Some of my favorite memories in racing and in life are because of him, and I will always be grateful for the impact he’s had on me both personally and professionally. He always been there for me no matter what the circumstances may have been. Right now, my thoughts and prayers are with Kyle, Samantha, Brexton, Lennix, the entire Busch family, and everyone who loves him. I’m asking everyone to keep the Busch family in your prayers and respect their privacy during this difficult time.”

I’m confident that no one can fill the void of not having “Rowdy Busch” on the track! Our Thoughts & Prayers Are With His Entire Family & Rowdy Nation!”
Landon Cassill: “Kyle played a pivotal role in my early success as a young Cup Series driver trying to qualify into the field for my first couple of starts. For the majority of my first Cup races in 2010, Kyle would take me out onto the track in a pace car and walk me through exactly how to drive it for qualifying speed, where to lift, the best line, where to be fully committed wide open, everything I needed to know. He’d spend 30 minutes out of his day with me on a day when we both had a job to do, and we’d just talk about racing, driving techniques, what he felt, what he was looking for. I was a rookie and got to watch the most talented stock car driver in the world drive a car and tell me exactly what he was thinking as he drove it, with his specific intention to help me feel the same thing. I’ve thought back on that time we spent together many times over the years, and I can’t help but think the tenths or hundredths of a second he helped me save were part of what got me into the field in those races. Those results are what kept me in business that year, and ultimately led to the opportunities I had down the road. My kids are learning to race right now, we’ve been racing Go Karts here in Iowa and around the Midwest. I had to chuckle to myself last weekend while giving my 10 year old son the exact same piece advice that Kyle gave me one time at Texas about what to look for in the feel of the tire. He’s 10, and learning the basics, and I’m sure it landed different for him than it did for me at 20, but the fundamentals are the same. Race cars are race cars, you’re just trying to feel the tire on the track, and nobody understood that better than KFB.”

In 2026, he led the field to green for the 68th running of the DAYTONA 500. Kyle also made an appearance in the prestigious Rolex 24 in 2020, driving in the GTD class. We share in honoring Kyle Busch’s remarkable career, on and off the track. Our thoughts are with the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing, and the entire motorsports world.”

Love him or hate him, he was competitive at anything he did. Last couple of years, he was really putting a lot of time into his family and Brexton, and I was trying to get him race NitroCross with all these jumps and crazy shenanigans. All the other drivers were like eh, we don’t really want to touch that. We race every weekend. But Kyle said hey … he raced our series one-off, ended up fourth place, and he did the best of anyone just jumping into the series, and he was so upset he didn’t win. That’s just Kyle. He could jump into anything and drive it. My heart is out to his family, and all the fans out here. It’s a huge loss for the sport.”

Vasser Sullivan Racing IMSA: “Kyle was one of the gnarliest competitors and a great champion. It didn’t take much convincing to have him join the Vasser Sullivan family to make a run at the Rolex 24 hour. Within minutes of meeting the team, he made it clear: ‘Let’s go get win this f****** watch boys’ Kyle had an intensity and demand for excellence like none other, and he made us all better the minute he walked in the trailer. I remember it would make me smile as he lifted that trophy high into the air after winning all those races as his little boy danced around the stage. Kyle would agree, thanking all of our veterans for their service and their sacrifice that allows us the freedom … to chase our dreams. I’m looking forward to a surprise performance of Some Gave All tonight to honor them.”
Singer Gary LeVox: “RIP my friend. You have driven on every track on the planet except the new one that you can drive on now. I’m not sure if there’s even corners on tracks of gold, but I hope u enjoy going as fast as you want to and U Win EVERYDAY FOR ETERNITY!!!!! kind of makes all the trophies look small down here, when you get to hold the hand of God now! hammer down, buddy”

US Vice President JD Vance: “I had the opportunity to meet Kyle, one of NASCAR’s greatest racers, on the campaign trail in 2024. Usha and I are praying for him and his family. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.”
US President Donald J. Trump: “The legendary NASCAR Driver Kyle Busch tragically and unexpectedly passed away yesterday. He was a true talent who loved NASCAR and its fans. Kyle was a winner! He was a two time Cup Champion, and holds the All Time Record for wins in NASCAR’s Top Three series, and even won another just last weekend. Kyle’s wife, Samantha, and their two beautiful children are in our thoughts and prayers. Samantha was at the White House in October, for IVF. She truly loved Kyle! Rest in Peace Kyle Busch. You will always be a legend!”
Marcus Smith, CEO of Speedway Motorsports and owner of Charlotte Motor Speedway
“Kyle Busch was a champion among champions — a once-in-a-generation competitor whose grit, unmistakable driving style and relentless pursuit of excellence elevated him to a place among the very best drivers in our sport. When Kyle climbed behind the wheel, he brought an intensity and determination that demanded respect from his competitors and inspired fans throughout motorsports.
“At Charlotte Motor Speedway, Kyle etched his name in history, earning more victories across NASCAR’s top three series than any other driver in our sport, highlighted by his victory in the 2018 Coca-Cola 600. Many of his remarkable 234 NASCAR victories came at Speedway Motorsports tracks where his talent and competitive spirit created countless memorable moments for more than two decades.
“Beyond his extraordinary accomplishments in NASCAR, Kyle’s passion for racing extended deeply into dirt racing and U.S. Legend Car competition, where he proudly shared the track with his son, Brexton. Away from the racetrack, Kyle was a savvy businessman, a devoted father and a loyal friend whose impact was felt far beyond the sport.
“Our hearts are with Samantha, Brexton, Lennix and the entire Busch family during this incredibly difficult time. We extend our deepest condolences, prayers and unwavering support as they mourn the loss of someone who meant so much to so many.”
Indianapolis Motor Speedway president Doug Boles
“Everyone at Indianapolis Motor Speedway is heartbroken to learn of the passing of Kyle Busch. Kyle was one of the most dominant racers in IMS history, highlighted by back-to-back NASCAR Cup Series Brickyard 400 victories in 2015 and 2016, making history by sweeping both the Cup and NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series races in those years. He won a record four O’Reilly Series races at the Racing Capital of the World and made his 700th career Cup Series start in the 30th anniversary 2024 Brickyard 400 at IMS – a significant career milestone. He was a fan favorite, loved for his competitive spirit and passion. He understood what racing and winning at Indianapolis means. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his wife, Samantha, children Brexton and Lennix, the entire Busch family, Richard Childress Racing and the entire NASCAR family.”
Dover Motor Speedway president Mike Tatoian (where Busch earned his final win last weekend)
“Our team at Dover Motor Speedway extends our deepest condolences to Samantha, Brexton, Lennix, and the entire Busch family. Words cannot accurately express our sadness upon hearing the horrible news of his passing. Kyle was one of the fiercest competitors our sport has ever seen, and his impact on NASCAR is immeasurable. His success at Dover Motor Speedway speaks to the incredible talent, toughness, and determination he brought every time he took to the track. He will forever be part of the history of The Monster Mile.”
Statement from Spire Motorsports co-owner Jeff Dickerson (the team Busch won his final race with at Dover)
“It is difficult to put into words what Kyle has meant to me and my family over the last 21 years, and how much my life has been shaped by the moments, both good and bad, we shared.
“There is no doubt my life would look entirely different had we not begun this journey together. The reality is our industry is filled with people who could say the exact same thing.
“Before SMT, before SIM, before YouTube, before radio transmissions were transcribed, Kyle and I spent countless hours dissecting every race, everything his car was doing, everything his competitors’ cars were doing, what he would do differently, what he needed from me or the team to find even the smallest advantage for the next race.
“He wanted to know every detail and had this immense curiosity not just on the track, but in appearances, business deals, everything. And because of that, he made me and everyone around him better.
“His demand for perfection was never a burden. It was a standard worth striving for.
“As anyone who truly knew him can attest, when Kyle said something kind to you, told you he appreciated you, or even gave you a simple “good job,” it meant something because praise wasn’t given freely. “It meant a great deal to me personally when we closed the transaction to acquire KBM, because those conversations began the same way our relationship did when we were younger: trying to figure out how to make his trucks faster.
“His relentless pursuit of speed, feel, and perfection became a pivotal chapter not just for me, but for the many employees who came with that journey. The spirit Kyle embodied still lives in our building through the people who started at KBM and remain with Spire today. That same spirit has no doubt left its mark at Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing, and Richard Childress Racing.
“Simply put, he was one of the best to ever do this. But for those closest to him, there was always another side.
“For years, many of us would tell people there was a softness behind the public persona they rarely saw. As much of a bad ass as he was on the track, some of us were lucky enough to experience how deeply he loved, how much he cared, and yes, how much he hurt.
“Yesterday, my oldest daughter Contessa graduated high school. We have so many pictures of Kyle holding her when she was only days old. The smile on his face, the amazement of holding another human being was incredibly moving.
“We used to tell people about that side of him, and some would assume we were just trying to reshape public perception. “No one could question it now.
“By now, the world has seen the incredible devotion he had to being a father to Brexton and Lennix. He loved his kids more than anything. The pride in his voice whenever he talked about them is something I will always remember with gratitude.
“And Samantha, you gave him a kind of happiness and grounding that was unmistakable from the start. He loved you from the very first moment he saw you, and that love only grew through every victory and every setback, on the track and off.
“My heart absolutely breaks for you, Brexton and Lennix.
“My thoughts are also with Tom, Gaye and Kurt and everyone in our industry who is trying to make sense of this loss. It does not seem real.”
Joint statement from NASCAR, RCR, and Busch family
“On behalf of the Busch family, everyone at Richard Childress Racing and all of NASCAR, we are devastated to announce the sudden and tragic passing of Kyle Busch.
“Our entire NASCAR family is heartbroken by the loss of Kyle Busch. A future Hall of Famer, Kyle was a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation. He was fierce, he was passionate, he was immensely skilled and he cared deeply about the sport and fans.
“Throughout a career that spanned more than two decades, Kyle set records in national series wins, won championships at NASCAR’s highest level and fostered the next generation of drivers as an owner in the Truck Series.
“His sharp wit and competitive spirit sparked a deep emotional connection with race fans of every age, creating the proud and loyal ‘Rowdy Nation.’ Our thoughts are with Samantha, Brexton and Lennix, Kyle and Samantha’s parents, Kurt and all of Kyle’s family, Richard and Judy Childress, everyone at Richard Childress Racing, his teammates, friends and fans. NASCAR lost a giant of the sport today, far too soon.
“During this incredibly difficult time, we ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy and continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Further updates will be shared as appropriate.”
