The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing Darnell Savage. Nearly three months after an initial report of Savage agreeing to a one-year deal with the Steelers, agent Seth Katz told NFL insider Aaron Wilson that the veteran safety is joining the team.
The news comes as Pittsburgh begins its mandatory minicamp today.

It’s unclear why Savage’s signing was so delayed. It may have been due to a health issue. Details of his contract aren’t known, but it’s likely a one-year contract for at or near the veteran minimum.
A 2019 first-round pick, Savage adds veteran depth to Pittsburgh’s secondary. After five years in Green Bay, he’s become a journeyman who has bounced around the league. Last year, he spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington Commanders, and finally with the Buffalo Bills. He struggled in Buffalo, giving up a long touchdown in the playoffs against the Denver Broncos.
Across all three teams, Savage recorded 18 tackles, three pass breakups, and one forced fumble in 2025. In 2024, he started 13 games for the Jaguars, posting 51 tackles, six pass breakups, and one interception.
Our March scouting report offered this conclusion about his game:
“Savage is still reasonably athletic, versatile, experienced, and aggressive. But his play is below average. He’s best coming downhill to fill the run and make tackles. In space, his angles are poor and he’s too often beat on double moves and advanced routes.”
Savage, who turns 29 in late July, will compete with rookie Robert Spears-Jennings and second-year Sebastian Castro for a spot on the team’s 53-man roster. All three will battle behind Jalen Ramsey, DeShon Elliott, and Jaquan Brisker. Pittsburgh will keep four or five safeties on the roster.
