The Pittsburgh Steelers will open the 2026 season at home against the Atlanta Falcons, and they have a chance to open 2027 at home as well. The MLB announced its schedule today, and the Pittsburgh Pirates are slated to be on the road the weekend of September 12. This will likely be Week 1 of the NFL season.
The 2027 MLB season is at risk of a potential lockout. But given the current schedule, it would make sense for the Steelers to open the 2027 season at home. In this scenario, Pittsburgh would have its first consecutive home openers since the 2013 and 2014 seasons. The Steelers lost to the Tennessee Titans in 2013, but beat the Cleveland Browns in 2014.
The Steelers lost their most recent home opener in 2023 against the San Francisco 49ers. Hopefully they’ll get a win against the Atlanta Falcons to open this season.
Funnily enough, the Pirates will play on the road against the San Francisco Giants before returning home on September 14. Fans could catch a Steelers game on Sunday if they open at home and stay in town to see the Pirates play a division rival, the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Pirates will also be home on Labor Day weekend, hosting the Milwaukee Brewers (if the season takes place).
Of course, it’s no guarantee that the Steelers will have a home opener. They could also open the season internationally or on the road in a weeknight game. But given the Pirates’ schedule, there’s now a decent chance the Steelers are back at home to begin next season.
With Aaron Rodgers making it known that 2026 will be his final season, the Steelers will have a new starting quarterback under center in an exciting new era for the team. Hopefully, this era begins at Acrisure Stadium in front of a raucous home crowd for the season opener.
