A former UFC light heavyweight champ wants a shot at Robert Whittaker after the former middleweight king’s successful 205-pound debut.
Former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker’s move to the light heavyweight division got off to a great start at UFC 329 last month. Whittaker finished Nikita Krylov by third-round knockout in his first fight at 205 pounds.
Whittaker aims for at least one more title push before considering retirement, and he believes he can be a force in the light heavyweight division. He could potentially be on a collision course with some of the division’s top contenders as he looks to enter the title shot discussion.
As Whittaker waits for his next Octagon assignment, there isn’t a shortage of potential opponents waiting to welcome him back to the cage. Whittaker was called out by one of the division’s greats in what would be an intriguing matchup.
Robert Whittaker called to ‘back up words with action’ by former UFC champ
In a recent tweet, former UFC light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz called out Whittaker.
“Hey Robert Whittaker! Let’s turn your words into action,” Blachowicz tweeted to Whittaker.
Blachowicz is fresh off a knockout loss to Navajo Stirling at UFC Belgrade last weekend. The former UFC light heavyweight titleholder is winless over his last five fights, including recent defeats to Carlos Ulberg and Alex Pereira.
Whittaker barely cuts any weight to make the light heavyweight limit, leading to potential quick turnarounds for the former middleweight titleholder. He could potentially return to the cage later this year.
Before knocking out Krylov, Whittaker suffered back-to-back middleweight losses to Reinier de Ridder and Khamzat Chimaev. The 35-year-old holds wins against the likes of Marvin Vettori, Jared Cannonier and Darren Till since losing the middleweight title to Israel Adesanya at UFC 243.
