The 2026 NFL offseason has been full of surprises that change the outlook on the future of the league. Certain moves, controversies, and actions by teams have created moments some of us will never forget.

One of the surprises of the NFL offseason actually came from college football, and finally, it seems that there’s a conclusion to that storyline.

Brendan Sorsby Speaks Out on His Football Future

Even before the 2026 NFL Draft, teams around the NFL had their sights set on the 2027 quarterback class, with it expected to be one of the best in a long time. In that group was the newly transferred Texas Tech QB, Brendan Sorsby. At Cincinnati, where Sorsby played previously, he finished his 2025 season ranking 10th in the country according to PFSN’s CFB QB Impact Metric.

Sorsby was a prospect teams were excited to see in 2026, but shortly after the NFL Draft, news broke that would change everything. It was found that he bet on games during his time in college and had a gambling addiction. Players betting on their own sport is something that goes against all anti-betting rules put in place, so there was a good chance Sorsby’s time in college football was over.

After getting a ruling in favor from a court in Texas to continue his college football career, Sorsby withdrew his lawsuit and decided the NFL would be his next journey. Right away, the supplemental draft became a major topic of discussion because teams were very interested in having Sorsby on their rosters.

But the NFL made a major decision to stand behind its anti-betting message and took away the supplemental draft for 2026. As this news hit, it was revealed that Sorsby and his representatives would fight this decision, but that did not last long.

Today, Sorsby himself announced that he will not fight further to play this season and will take this year to deal with his gambling addiction and prepare for 2027.

“There has been a lot of news about me out there and I want to share this statement to make sure things are clear,” Sorsby wrote. “I accept 100% responsibility for my actions. I did not have control of my gambling problem and it took getting caught for me to realize that, but it was truly the best thing that could’ve happened to me. Because of this, I have been able get the help I need and fully focus on my recovery.”

“The news about the supplemental draft changes nothing about my recovery journey – I will continue to take it one day at a time,” he continued. “Focusing on making myself better throughout this process and making sure to share what I have learned and will continue to learn with others going forward. I am fully committed to being the best version of myself that I can be while getting ready for the 2027 draft. God makes no mistakes and I look forward to seeing the good that is to come from this.”

With Sorsby saying, “‘I did not have control of my gambling problem”, he is admitting that his addiction was a major issue that needs to be dealt with. However, he recently spent time in a residential treatment program and continues to focus on his ongoing recovery.

For his long-term health and his career, staying away from football to focus fully on getting himself right might be the best decision.

Regarding the 2027 Draft, the NFL issued a memo following this decision stating that Sorsby will be eligible for the event.

“We have confirmed with the NFLPA and Brendan Sorsby that there will be no further litigation regarding his entry into the NFL — and that instead, Mr. Sorsby will focus on his preparation for entry into the League via the 2027 NFL Draft. For purposes of League and CBA rules, Mr. Sorsby will be considered a “Draft-Eligible” player for the 2027 NFL Draft,” the memo noted. “Mr. Sorsby will not be eligible to sign an NFL Player Contract until the completion of the 2027 NFL Draft.”

Although we are still a year away from the 2027 NFL Draft, it seems like this group of players will be a storyline to watch all season, including Sorsby.
