UFC welterweight contender Carlos Prates saw gaping holes in Islam Makhachev’s game while watching him at UFC 330.

UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev retained his title earlier this month by defeating Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330. Makhachev won by unanimous decision after winning the belt last year.

After UFC 330, Makhachev has no shortage of potential title challengers to face in his next fights. The division’s top contender, Carlos Prates, is likely next for Makhachev after recent wins over Leon Edwards and Jack Della Maddalena.

Prates watched cageside as Makhachev defeated his former rival, Garry, inside the Octagon at UFC 330. Despite being the UFC’s pound-for-pound best fighter, Makhachev continues to evolve in all facets of his game.

But Prates believes Garry exposed some big holes in the champion’s game, despite the loss.

In a recent interview with former UFC welterweight Gilbert Burns, Prates was asked about what he took away from Makhachev’s performance.

“Honestly, I think I got even more confident [watching],” Prates said.

“Because of the stuff I’ve seen, and the time I have to train, I think it’s possible I can [beat him]. Then I saw how Ian defended some positions as I do, with your back against the fence, and I said, ‘Damn, I do that a lot’. Ian’s very tall, so it’s hard for Makhachev to get the hooks in, so I told myself that I can adapt to that.

“I think this guy is screwed, man,” Prates continued. “I think I’ll get a hold of him.”

Makhachev vs. Prates could potentially take place later this year in either November or December. Michael Morales, who most recently defeated Sean Brady at UFC 322 last year, is another intriguing contender for Makhachev’s next fight.

In either case, Prates feels more confident than ever that he’ll dethrone Makhachev if their fight is booked.
