Slowly but surely, the NFL’s various voices are beginning to wonder aloud if the Minnesota Vikings need to enhance the quarterback spot. Seeing the QB1, the ultra-talented Kyler Murray, sitting atop such tame statistics will do that.

But does that really mean that Kirk Cousins could be a Vikings trade target?

On ESPN, Jeremy Fowler did some purple dot connecting while dropping Cousins down at 22nd in the list of top 25 NFL trade candidates. Meanwhile, Mike Ginnitti over at Spotrac has more explicitly drawn the connection between the player and team, including a Cousins to Minnesota hypothetical trade among his list of “5 Not-So-Crazy NFL Trade Deadline Blockbusters.”

Does Kirk Cousins Come Back to Twin Cities?

The 6-0 Vikings are likely to be buyers. The 3-4 Raiders are likely to be sellers. As a result, the two teams look like natural dance partners, especially since they don’t play in the same conference. Usually, teams aren’t thrilled about equipping a conference rival with a starting-level passer, but that’s not a factor here.

Better yet, the Raiders have a clear replacement option in Fernando Mendoza, the No. 1 selection who is the long-term starter in Sin City. Minnesota has been rallying around Murray but are sitting atop just 6 touchdowns in the passing game; worst yet, Wentz has 3 of those touchdowns in less than two games of action.

The newcomer at QB still looks like a clunky fit in the O’Connell offense. Making a move for a solid veteran passer — say, Kirk Cousins — who knows the O’Connell offense makes a pile of sense.

Consider what the ESPN piece had to say for some of the rationale behind a possible Kirk Cousins trade. The proposed team fits are the Carolina Panthers, New York Giants, and Minnesota Vikings.

“Cousins played well enough through seven games that he has trade value. So does his contract, which after being reworked features a $1.3 million base salary,” Fowler explains. “Aidan O’Connell, the Raiders’ QB3, is a former starter who could slide into the primary backup role to Fernando Mendoza if Las Vegas is ready to start the rookie. There are no glaring needs at quarterback leaguewide, but injuries happen every week. The Raiders have not planned to be overly active at the deadline.”

Pivot to chew on the rationale from Spotrac.

The insight from the salary cap website: “Don’t call it a comeback? Cousins’ role in Las Vegas could be receding, as the push for Fernando Mendoza gets stronger and stronger. With that said, the 38-year-old has looked downright good through much of 2026, despite the Raiders’ lackluster passing options. The 6-0 Vikings have made due offensively with Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz at the helm, but there’s no financial pressure to continue down that path.”

Kirk Cousins is a veteran quarterback who has always been praised for his brains, work ethic, and accuracy. He doesn’t boast the same ceiling as Murray but does have a higher floor. Partner that reality with the built-in connection with O’Connell and chemistry with Justin Jefferson and it’s not hard to connect the purple dots.

He’d likely demand a pick on Day 3. Think a 5th or a 6th as a rough price estimate. Anything more would quickly get silly (note: NFL teams do silly things sometimes).

So far, Cousins has tossed 16 touchdowns and 5 interceptions onto the stat sheet. He’s completing 62.6% of his passes while climbing up to 1,877 yards.

The Raiders don’t have the same weapons as the Vikings but it would be hard to persuasively argue that O’Connell is a better playcaller than Klint Kubiak. Does an increase in skill talent but a (possible) downgrade in playcalling lead to a Cousins who plays at roughly the same level as in Las Vegas?

Another factor is that Nolan Teasley wasn’t the GM when Murray got signed. Quite possibly, the top decision maker in the front office doesn’t feel a ton of loyalty.

Kirk Cousins is 38.
