Here’s what to know about this oddsboard:
THE DEFENDING CHAMPS: At the end of last season, the Dodgers became the first back-to-back World Series champs since the Yankees won three in a row from 1998 to 2000. In addition, L.A. won its third championship in the past six years. As for this season? L.A. has picked up right where it left off. As of Aug 3, the Dodgers have the second-best record in baseball and are atop the NL West by 10 games.
L.A. LANDS ITS ACE: Oh, and the Dodgers just traded for arguably the best pitcher in baseball. Detroit sent its long-time ace to the West Coast before the trade deadline, trading Tarik Skubal to L.A. in exchange for three prospects. The 29-year-old Skubal spent just over six seasons in Detroit. There, he won the AL Cy Young in 2023 and 2024, leading the league in ERA both seasons. He also led MLB in WAR (6.7) and strikeouts (228) back in 2024. Across 2024 and 2025, he had a combined record of 31-10 and struck out a combined 469 batters. He will now lead a pitching staff that includes Yoshinobu Yamamoto (reigning World Series MVP), Shohei Ohtani (suffering from knee inflammation), Blake Snell (IL) and Tyler Glasnow (IL).
DEADLINE RISERS: The Red Sox and Cubs have both seen their World Series odds improve following the MLB trade deadline. After acquiring Adley Rutschman from the Orioles, Boston’s odds to win the World Series climbed from +1700 to +1400. Rutschman is hitting .251 on the season with eight home runs, 47 RBIs and an OPS of .764. The Red Sox have won 26 of their last 31 games and have officially gone “all in” on their postseason push, trading three of their top five prospects to land the three-time All-Star catcher. The Cubs also climbed the oddsboard, improving from +1800 to +1500 after an aggressive deadline of their own. Chicago bolstered its pitching staff by adding starters Kevin Gausman, Clay Holmes and Braxton Garrett, along with reliever Ryan Zeferjahn.
