Aldon Smith, one of the NFL’s most talented pass rushers of the last decade, has passed away at the age of 36.
The news was confirmed by the San Francisco 49ers, the organization that drafted Smith with the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.
In a statement released by the team, the 49ers expressed their sorrow over Smith’s passing.
“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith,” the team said. “Aldon’s undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen. Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into.”
Smith burst onto the NFL scene in 2011, immediately establishing himself as one of the league’s premier edge rushers. During his first two seasons, he accumulated an impressive 33.5 sacks in just 32 regular-season games, helping transform the 49ers defense into one of the NFL’s most feared units.
His outstanding rookie campaign earned him runner-up honors for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. In 2012, Smith reached the peak of his career, earning First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl selections after recording 19.5 sacks. He was also a key contributor on the 49ers team that advanced to Super Bowl XLVII.
Despite his remarkable talent, Smith’s career was repeatedly impacted by off-field issues. In 2014, he served a nine-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Following a DUI arrest in August 2015, the 49ers released him.
Smith later joined the Oakland Raiders, appearing in nine games during the 2015 season before receiving an indefinite NFL suspension after Week 10. He missed the entire 2016 and 2017 seasons before being released by the Raiders in 2018 following a domestic violence-related arrest.
After several years away from football, Smith made an inspiring comeback with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020. He started all 16 games and recorded five sacks, earning recognition as one of the league’s most notable comeback stories. He later signed with the Seattle Seahawks in 2021 but was released before the regular season began.
Over his NFL career, Smith appeared in 59 games, recording 52.5 sacks and earning numerous accolades during his dominant early years. Though his career was marked by both tremendous success and personal challenges, his impact on the field remains undeniable.
