It has been three months since the NFL’s 2026 free-agency period got underway, yet star wide receiver Tyreek Hill has yet to ink a contract with a team after being released by the Miami Dolphins.
In recent years, Hill has been one of the most productive wide receivers in the NFL. And over the course of his 10-year NFL career, he has totaled 819 receptions, 11,363 receiving yards, and 90 touchdowns.
So, why is Hill still a free agent, and will he be signed?
Breaking Down Tyreek Hill’s Free Agency
The main reason that Hill remains unsigned is his health. During the Dolphins’ Week 4 game against the New York Jets last season, Hill suffered a gruesome injury while being tackled. The star wide receiver tore his ACL (in addition to other ligaments) and dislocated his knee. Hill underwent surgery shortly after, and he’s still recovering from that devastating injury.
Recently, Hill posted photos showing him wearing a knee brace and a wrist brace. Last offseason, Hill had a pair of surgeries on his wrist (one to repair a ligament issue and then a second to remove the screws that were placed).
It’s unclear if Hill needed another surgery on his wrist this offseason, but the fact that he’s wearing multiple braces is an indication that he’s focused more on healing than on football at the moment.
On June 3, Hill’s agent Drew Rosenhaus told Miami sportscaster Josh Moser that there “really isn’t a set timetable on when he’s going to be ready to go” since “he’s still in the midst of a rigorous recovery and rehab.”

Hill is 32 years old, coming off a serious injury, and has some off-field baggage, so there’s some risk associated with signing him. However, he will have suitors once he gets healthy.
After all, in the four games he played before getting hurt last season, Hill was on a 17-game pace for 1,127 receiving yards. In 2023, he was a first-team All-Pro and came in second for Offensive Player of the Year voting. He is a five-time All-Pro and Super Bowl champion who has recorded six 1,000-yard seasons.
The Kansas City Chiefs remain an intriguing destination for Hill given their history with him. After re-signing Travis Kelce and re-hiring offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, it seems the Chiefs are putting together their version of the Last Dance, so perhaps a Hill reunion makes sense as well.
Kansas City missed the playoffs last year, so they may be open to a high-risk, high-reward move as they look to bounce back.
