Would UFC consider parting ways with Conor McGregor? Henry Cejudo thinks the idea isn’t so far-fetched.
McGregor’s comeback fight at UFC 329 back in July didn’t go the way most envisioned. Quickly into his rematch with Max Holloway, the “Notorious” one injured his knee and the fight was stopped just past the one-minute mark. The popular Irishman ultimately suffered ACL and meniscus injuries and had to undergo surgery.
McGregor plans on completing the final bout of his UFC contract in 2027, but Cejudo wonders if the top MMA promotion would benefit from cutting ties with McGregor right now. Cejudo explained why it’s likely in consideration with the UFC brass during an episode of the “Pound 4 Pound Podcast” (via MMAFighting.com).
“At this point, he’s just f*cking trolling,” Cejudo said. “I don’t believe anything that he’s saying. But he’s a draw, you know? Now it’s up to the UFC to say, ‘Hey, we’re going to pay you this much because you’re worth this much.’ I guarantee, I’m going to tell you right now, I can even see the UFC just letting him go based on what he got paid. They could be like, ‘Hey, you know what? You’ve got one fight left. We don’t think you’re worth that. You’re a free agent.’
“If I’m a businessman and I want to keep a lot of my money, and I like Conor—f*ck Conor. I would cut him. I swear to you I would, because if they’re going to give him 30 million and not have to give him 30 million particularly with that big-ass Paramount deal that they have and Paramount has to make their money, hey, just cut him. Let him be a free agent. Let him make more money elsewhere, but let him not make money or take money from us.”
McGregor has insisted that he needs to fight Holloway a third time for his comeback bout. Holloway hasn’t been booked since the unfortunate ending to his matchup with “Mystic Mac.” Time will tell if the UFC brass goes through with booking that fight again, or if Cejudo is actually onto something with his roster cut suggestion.
Is there any chance UFC releases Conor McGregor before he gets to complete the last fight on his contract? Let us know in the comments below.
