Jacoby Brissett, a veteran quarterback, appears to be up for grabs. Do the Vikings show any interest in acquiring the man who could yet again push Kyler Murray down a depth chart?
Consider what NFL insider Jonathan Jones of The Athletic had to say: “The Cardinals are naming Gardner Minshew their starting quarterback and benching Jacoby Brissett, head coach Mike LaFleur announces. Carson Beck will be QB2 and Brissett will be the emergency third QB. This is a signal to the NFL that they can trade for Brissett.”
Given how things have gone, Brissett likely could be had for a late-round selection. After all, he held out during the offseason before then getting benched, so the passer didn’t bloom in the desert.
To begin, note that Mr. Brissett offers much to like, at least on a very basic biographical level.
The 33-year-old passer got chosen at No. 91 in the 2016 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. Putting in time in the Boston area means having some natural overlap with HC Kevin O’Connell and DC Brian Flores since these two key coaches used to call Foxborough home. Better yet, Brissett offers the build of an O’Connell quarterback since he stands at 6’4″ and weighs 235 pounds. He’s not the world’s most impressive athlete — he ran a sluggish 4.94 forty — but Brissett has proven reasonably accurate in his career, completing 62.1% of his career passes.
And now consider the career stops for the journeyman:
Brissett hasn’t yet been able to solidify a single quarterback opening for a long time. He has, however, consistently received chances to prove himself, evidently creating enough intrigue to continue demanding a chance.
For whatever it’s worth, the best moments with Kevin O’Connell and the quarterback position have involved guys like Kirk Cousins, Joshua Dobbs, Nick Mullens, and especially Sam Darnold, all of whom are veterans who had been around for a while. Murray is the outlier.
Arizona appears ready to move on, so the question is whether the Vikings ought to consider the veteran quarterback. Doing so would be a bold decision given that he’s a former teammate of Kyler Murray, the current starter who is struggling and hurt. Would Minnesota pull off the move given the history between the two players?
Very seldom, folks, has it looked so burdensome to pass the football to Justin Jefferson, a historically great receiver who is moving through his most modest season in the NFL. Whoever plays quarterback from Week 9 onward needs to get the football into Jefferson’s hands on a consistent basis.
Consider a wild statistical outlook to clarify what’s taking place:
Justin Jefferson has 335 yards.
He’s averaging a career-low 55.8 yards per game.
Seeing that average continue means Jefferson will finish with 893 yards. Very seldom has it ever looked so difficult to hit the #Vikings WR1 who has so often been open out there.
— K. Joudry (@VikingsGazette) November 3, 2026 If, in the end, Kyler Murray can figure things out, then that’s the option Minnesota should pursue. Indeed, being able to continue building up the current starter is the simplest, cleanest solution that’s out there as a possibility. Crucially, the Murray upside is slipping away with each passing week.
The Vikings must therefore consider whether veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett makes sense. He boasts a pile of experience, has been accurate in his career, and has great size. Turning to him isn’t without any downside but the possibility exists that the Vikings need to go back to the drawing board at quarterback if Kyler flops yet again in Week 9.
The NFL trade deadline arrives on Tuesday, November 10th. Seeing a 6-2 Vikings squad on that day makes a trade more likely.
