UFC welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry says he’s gone radio silent on social media ahead of his showdown with Islam Makhachev.
Ian Machado Garry is days away from squaring off against UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 330. Garry earned the next welterweight title shot after recent wins over former titleholder Belal Muhammad and Carlos Prates.
Ahead of the biggest fight of his life, many fans have criticized Garry for some of his recent media appearances. A recent marketing campaign with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, along with claiming that the world would be ‘better run by women’, has ruffled many feathers.
Garry’s relationship with UFC fans has been up-and-down during his promotional tenure. Despite the online noise, Garry has abandoned his social media to avoid distractions.
Ian Machado Garry denies knowing anything about ‘online backlash’ ahead of UFC 330
In a recent interview with Betvictor Casino, Garry was asked about recent backlash he’s received since some of his pre-fight interviews were made public.
“What do I think about online backlash? I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Garry said.
“I have absolutely no idea about any backlash or any criticism because I haven’t been online. I have a world title fight against the best fighter on the planet right now, and that is all I have been focused on. I don’t use social media anymore. I use it to promote the fight.
“I use it to promote interviews that I’ve done and podcasts that I’ve done,” Garry continued. “I do not scroll and look at comments. I do not scroll and look at tagged photos. I do not scroll and look at anything. Me and my team sit down, we post, we talk about the caption, and that’s it. I don’t look at anything else. I don’t need to. I don’t need to see anyone else’s opinion of me or what I choose to do in my life.” (h/t MMA Mania)
