Newly crowned UFC lightweight champion Justin Gaethje has been handed a medical suspension of up to 180 days following his TKO victory over Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250 on June 14, with the champion requiring clearance on injuries before he can return to competition.
Gaethje claimed the undisputed lightweight title in the main event on the White House South Lawn, but the California State Athletic Commission has suspended the 37-year-old pending MRI clearances on his right wrist and left knee. He must also serve a mandatory 45-day rest period following the five-round contest.
The suspension could be reduced if the required medical examinations reveal no significant issues, potentially allowing Gaethje to return to action before the full six-month term expires.
Topuria, meanwhile, was also issued a 180-day medical suspension after suffering facial injuries in the bout. The former champion must receive clearance from a surgeon before competing again. Reports indicated that damage sustained during the fight affected his vision, contributing to his corner’s decision to stop the contest after the fourth round.
The event produced a number of lengthy medical suspensions, including a 180-day suspension for Alex Pereira following his defeat to Ciryl Gane in the co-main event. In total, nine fighters reportedly received extended suspensions as a result of injuries sustained during the card. Attention now turns to the future of the lightweight division as Gaethje recovers. Potential challengers include leading contender Arman Tsarukyan, while a rematch with Topuria remains a possibility depending on both fighters’ recovery timelines.
