Alexander Volkanovski believes there is a clear next contender for his featherweight title.
Volkanovski defended his featherweight title with a TKO win over Movsar Evloev at UFC 333 on Saturday. After the win, many wondered if Volkanovski would retire or what his next steps would be.
The featherweight champ opened the door for a potential move to lightweight for the belt. Yet, if he stays at featherweight, Volkanovski believes Aljamain Sterling should get the next title shot if he wins his next fight.
“When we’re talking about who deserves it more, I’m gonna say Aljo. Especially after another win, taking a fight against a dangerous guy like Kevin. But if Aljo loses, then I think it’s just Jean. I think it really is up to that fight,” Volkanovski said to Ariel Helwani.
It’s a fair point from Volkanovski, as if Sterling does beat Vallejos, he should be the next contender. It would also be a big fight as Sterling is the former bantamweight champion and would get the chance to be a two-division champion against Volkanovski.
However, many fans would also like the Silva matchup, as the Brazilian is an all-action fighter and is known for his striking and power, which could pose some problems for Volkanovski.
Alexander Volkanovski is open to lightweight fight
Although Volkanovski has some intriguing featherweight options, he is also leaving the door open to moving up.
The lightweight division is murky, as Gaethje could retire or perhaps fight Volkanovski. If he does retire, Volkanovski said he would vacate his belt to face Arman Tsarukyan for the vacant lightweight title.
“Arman keeps saying that he thinks Justin is gonna retire. So if Justin really does retire, I think it’s all been settled. I’ll vacate the featherweight belt and fight Arman for the title. There it is. I’m starting to get more excited for that than the Gaethje fight,” Volkanovski added.
Whether or not the UFC has any interest in seeing Volkanovski move up is to be seen. But, he could stay at featherweight and face Sterling or Silva next time out.
