Tonight’s UFC Vegas 124 event was headlined by a highly anticipated heavyweight bout between Waldo Cortes-Acosta and Johnny Walker.
Cortes-Acosta (17-5 MMA) had entered this evening’s main event with hopes of snapping a two-fight losing skid. ‘Salsa Boy’ had suffered unanimous decision losses to Curtis Blaydes and Alexander Volkov in his most previous Octagon appearances. Prior to those setbacks, Waldo had strung together three straight stoppage wins, an impressive stretch which included a second-round TKO victory over Derrick Lewis.
Meanwhile, Johnny Walker (24-10 MMA) was making a quick turnaround this evening. The fan favorite had competed just last month, where he earned a first-round knockout victory over Mick Parkin in his return to heavyweight. The 34-year-old Brazilian had gone 2-3 over his previous five fights overall.
Tonight’s UFC Vegas 124 main event begins proved to be a wild back and forth affair. Johnny Walker was able to get off to a strong start with some heavy low kicks, but Waldo Cortes-Acosta eventually found his range and was able to score a knockdown later in the opening round. While round two was a better round for ‘Salsa Boy’, that didn’t stop Walker from coming back and scoring an unorthodox finish midway through round three.
