No NFL team will finish the regular season 17-0 after the Minnesota Vikings fell to the Detroit Lions on Sunday by a score of 19-15.
The Vikings headed into the weekend as the final undefeated team in the NFL, and they put that perfect record on the line in a road divisional matchup in Detroit. The game could have gone a long way towards easing any fears that this team is capable of competing with the better half of the NFL in January, but instead, some of those worst fears were realized.
Minnesota’s run defense gave me some fears last weekend when they let Jonathan Taylor break free for a couple big runs, and those fears are amplified ten-fold after this game.
Jared Goff didn’t exactly have a great game passing the ball, but it really didn’t matter down the stretch of this game when the Lions were getting first downs on virtually every carry.
For most of the first half, Minnesota was actually very stout in the running game, but then, Jahmyr Gibbs broke a 19-yard scamper on the final offensive play of the first half to set up a field goal attempt. From there, the flood gates were open.
The Lions finished the game with 230 rushing yards on their 39 carries. Gibbs accounted for 153 of those yards, but Sione Vaki also put up 65 carries on his 11 carries. Coming into the game, he had totaled just 56 rushing yards all season on 16 carries. This is now back-to-back games with a big rushing performance against this Vikings defense, and a lot of it had to do with just being stubborn about continuing to run the ball. Teams will start taking notice, and things don’t get any easier with a matchup against the Buffalo Bills next week.
Speaking of the upcoming schedule, this was largely viewed as the start of a big test for the Vikings over the next month or so.
After that Monday Night Football matchup with the Bills, the Vikings will head out on the road on a short week to play the Packers at Lambeau Field, then host the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday Night Football, host the Atlanta Falcons (who boasted the fourth-most rushing yards in the NFL coming into Sunday), host the Carolina Panthers, and then head out east for a road matchup with the Patriots on Thursday Night Football. Then, they host the Detroit Lions.
That second matchup with a 5-2 Detroit Lions team is infinitely more important now that very easily could decide a tiebreaker for the division title. For some, the parallels to how the 2024 season ended may be coming into play here heading into the second half of the season.
While the Vikings defense certainly took a step back this week, they still held Detroit to 19 points, which further raises red flags about Minnesota’s offensive attack. The good news is that Kyler Murray threw for a pair of touchdown passes for the first time this season. The bad news is that was all the scoring the Vikings could muster all afternoon.
The biggest problem right now has been finding success on third down. They came into the weekend as one of the worst teams converting on third downs this season (just a 36.7% conversion rate), and that only got worse on Sunday by converting just three of their 10 third downs all afternoon.
All that against a Lions defense that had allowed the second-most passing yards coming into Sunday, and they lost DJ Wonnum, Jack Campbell, and Brian Branch over the course of the game.
Ultimately, this inability to sustain drives is the main reason for the defense starting to show cracks. Detroit held the ball for 11 and a half more minutes than the Vikings on Sunday. When a defense is out on the field that often against an offense that has proven to have some of the best firepower in the NFL, inevitably they are going to start giving up yards no matter how good they are. At 6-1, the sky isn’t falling as of now, but this Vikings team is consistently showing the concerns that I had with them coming into the year on the offensive side of the ball.
This upcoming week is a big one not only because of the matchup with the Bills, but also because the trade deadline is approaching on November 10. It is pretty clear this team needs to bring in another piece or two on offense in order to live up to their Super Bowl aspirations, so we’ll see if that happens in the coming days.
