NFL Insider Who Broke the Kyler Murray News Opens the Door to a J.J. McCarthy Trade

The Minnesota Vikings have long insisted that the best path forward was with a super deep quarterback room. For good reason, Kevin O’Connell wants several competent passers available. His wisdom has been of the hard-earned variety since there were so many struggles to keep the purple passers upright in 2023 and 2025.

Still, perhaps the foremost NFL insider thinks that a trade could arrive.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news of Kyler Murray securing the QB1 job. He has since spent a decent amount of time unpacking the significance. Consider some of the background he offered relating to McCarthy’s turbulence since getting scooped up at No. 10 in the 2024 NFL Draft: “J.J. McCarthy missed his entire rookie season due to injury and started just ten games last year, with Minnesota winning six of them. Now the still only 23-year-old will be forced to be a backup.”

More fascinating, perhaps, is Schefter’s seemingly stream of consciousness speculation about a trade taking place to emerge in a separate clip.

The clip got circulated online. Give things a look:

Quite possibly, the absolute best thing for J.J. McCarthy is to be the backup. Doing so means stepping away from the spotlight to be given time to refine his craft.

But then there’s an issue that Schefter highlights: “But J.J. McCarthy also has upside, he’s just not going to get the chance to show it early on here in Minnesota. And that will lead to questions about his future in Minnesota and how much longer he will be there.”

The questions that Adam Schefter are asking make sense.

Drafting a passer at No. 10 means drafting a starter. Or, at least, somebody who is believed to be the future starter. What’s making that outlook tricky is the convergence of injury and poor play, factors that prompted Minnesota to bring in a new starter in Mr. Murray. Worse yet, the GM who made the call on McCarthy — Kwesi Adofo-Mensah — is no longer in Minnesota (he’s back in San Francisco’s front office).

A trade could be the best course of action for both team and player alike.

Earlier in his answer, Schefter describes the inexperience in McCarthy as a 23-year-old arm who has only been involved in ten games.

“And you have to wonder if he’s going to be the next quarterback à la Baker Mayfield, à la Sam Darnold, à la Daniel Jones,” Schefter wonders, “that needs a change of scenery before he is allowed to thrive in the NFL level. He’s so young and still has so much NFL future and, obviously, when the Vikings are going to Kyler Murray this early, it seems like it was almost predetermined, predestined to go that way.”

Folks, the word “almost” is doing a lot of heavy lifting for Adam Schefter here.

Regardless of how true the competition was, the Vikings now sit in an awkward spot.

J.J. McCarthy boasts a ton of talent. He’s well liked by his teammates and is young. Being on a rookie deal means being affordable. Teams around the NFL will have interest. Is that interest going to be a two-way street? Put differently, are the Vikings actually willing to move on?
