The bout, which will see Topuria put his lightweight title status on the line against former interim champion Gaethje, had largely been promoted through competitive sporting rivalry before recent comments involving Gaethje’s father added a more personal dimension to the build-up.
The dispute began after Gaethje’s father predicted his son would defeat Topuria, prompting a response from the former featherweight champion. Gaethje later rejected accusations that he had crossed a line in subsequent remarks directed at Topuria. “Proving my point. Insufferable little b*tch boy. Never said a thing about your wife. You want to speak words to my father then act like I crossed some line. We already fighting buddy,” said Gaethje, according to social media posts cited in the exchange.
Topuria responded by accusing Gaethje of escalating the situation after comments referencing his divorce. “You should’ve kept your father out of this. He was the one calling me a short guy and saying you’d smash me, all while holding a beer in his hand. Then you started talking about my divorce and telling the world you wouldn’t want to be my roommate. Idiot. First, we’re fighting, not dating. Second, I’m not looking for a roommate. When I put you to sleep and you’re lying there next to the rose, I’ll look at your father and ask him one simple question: Who’s the short one now? I’m gonna break you Justin,” said Topuria.
Topuria is currently listed as a significant betting favourite for the matchup. While the bout was not initially viewed by some observers as the most anticipated lightweight pairing available, the growing animosity between the two fighters has added further intrigue to a contest that already promised an aggressive, knockout-focused style from both men.
