Wow. Down goes OKC.
The defending champions were favored to repeat from preseason all the way to Game 7 of the Western Conference finals, which took place on their home court.
But a repeat was not meant to be.
Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs booked an NBA Finals berth by winning Game 6 at home and then Game 7 in enemy territory. They will now face the Knicks in the championship series, and enjoy home-court advantage in the process.
It will serve as a rematch of the 1998-99 NBA Finals, when Tim Duncan’s Spurs beat the Knicks in five games.
San Antonio and New York faced off three times during the regular season, including in the championship of the NBA Cup. The Knicks won that NBA Cup championship by 11 (124-113), lost at San Antonio by two (134-132) and beat the Spurs in New York by 25 (114-89).
In short, New York probably prefers this matchup, after it went winless against the Thunder during the regular season.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 35 for the Thunder, and Cason Wallace had 17. However, the other three OKC starters — Chet Holmgren, Isaiah Hartenstein and Lu Dort — combined to score just 14 points on 5-for-13 shooting.
Meanwhile, all five San Antonio starters scored in double figures in Game 7, led by Wemby’s 22 points.
