All groupings playing ‘back nine’ at Aronimink
All the Thursday afternoon groupings have played at least nine holes at Aronimink as the sun is expected to set around 8:08 local time. Will the entire first round be played or will there be some runover Friday morning? It’ll be a close call, something to monitor over the next two hours of play at the year’s second major.
Timothy Wiseman, Matti Schmid, and Austin Smotherman were the last grouping off the tee at No. 10, while Bernd Wiesberger, Sudarshan Yellamaraju, and Andy Sullivan were the final trio to go off at No. 1 before 2:30.

With birdies on four of his last six holes, the defending PGA Championship winner is now tied with six other players atop the leaderboard at Aronimink.
Justin Thomas and Corey Conners also are at 3 under on the back nine, while four others are in the clubhouse locked in with 67s after going off earlier during Thursday’s opening round.

Corey Conners second consecutive birdie on the back nine has pushed the two-time Tour winner into a seven-player tie atop the PGA Championship leaderboard.
Like Conners, Justin Thomas and Martin Kaymer are on the course battling to stay 3 under — or potentially get to a lower score by the end of their respective rounds.
In the clubhouse tied at 67 are a quadrant of international names: Aldrich Potgieter, Stephan Jaegar, Min Woo Lee and Ryo Hisatsune.

A two-time winner on Tour this season, Chris Gotterup got an assist at the par-4 11th hole that helped set him up for an opening round birdie.
The birdie tap-in helped Gotterup undo a bogey that started the back nine. He sits T-57 at 1 over with a handful of holes left to play in the first round.
Welcome to Shane Lowry’s elevator ride
Shane Lowry has been up and down and all around Aronimink during Thursday’s opening round.
The work is paying off as the Irishman is sitting a stroke off the lead at 2 under. His eagle to end the front nine was an early highlight.
He also birdied on the par-4 11th to climb the leaderboard. Those shots have helped erase a pair of bogeys on at No. 1 and No. 8.

Brooks on LIV: ‘It’s in the past’
Brooks Koepka is worried about one thing and one thing only: putting.
The three-time Wanamaker Trophy winner and former LIV player was asked about his former Tour’s ongoing financial situation after shooting a 1-under 69 at Aronimink, and made it clear where his focus was this week’s PGA Championship.
“I don’t have any involvement with it anymore, so I don’t pay any attention to it. I’m kind of in my own little world, and I’d like to stay there,” Koepka told reporters. “It’s in the past, and I’m on the PGA Tour now, and I’m just focused on how I can figure out how to make this putter work.”
Koepka, who changed putters from a blade to a mallet at the WM Phoenix Open earlier this year, said he was feeling more comfortable at this point.
“A little bit of speed, a little bit of confidence. That kind of sums it up. It’s just been miss after miss,” he explained. “It’s tough to kind of build any confidence when you’re not putting well.”

‘Couldn’t feel any worse’: Rahm on divot striking volunteer
If anyone knows the volunteer who was hit in the face by a divot after Jon Rahm’s errant approach shot on the seventh hole Thursday, the two-time major winner would like to give him a present.
Rahm, who apologized to the person during his round, explained the situation to the media and called it “inexcusable.”
“I got a flier on my second shot that went long. It’s not a good spot. Just out of frustration, I tried to make an air swing, just over the grass, and I wasn’t looking, took a divot, and unfortunately, I hit a volunteer,” Rahm said. “Unfortunately it hit him in the shoulder and then the face. Which I couldn’t feel any worse. That’s why I was there apologizing. I need to somehow track him down to give him a present because that’s inexcusable and for something that could be completely avoidable.”
“Whether it was my intention or not, it was just not good.”

The defending champ hit trouble on No. 4 but responded with a fiery a back-to-back birdie stretch that got him to 1 under through seven.
Scheffler is currently T-14 on the Aronimink leaderboard.
Niemann on first major round of year: ‘Nice to get going’
Joaquin Niemann was one of the bigger names not at Augusta, and that situation provided plenty motivation during his opening round at Aronimink Thursday.
The 27-year-old Chilean, who finished T-8 at Quail Hollow last year, currently ranks 167th in the world and did not qualify for the Masters this year.
“It’s a tough course, a lot of anxiety coming before the round,” Niemann told reporters after. “It’s nice to get it going. Played a good round. It was fun out there.”
He shot a 1-under 69 and currently sits T-14 at this year’s PGA Championship. A two-time winner on Tour, Niemann joined LIV Golf in 2022. He’s won seven times on the LIV circuit.
“I always try to do my best. I always try to improve,” he said after his round Thursday. “I think I was saying to Pete Cowen yesterday, the day I figure out this game, I’m going to retire. And he answers, ‘I’m 75 years old, and I haven’t figured it out yet, so good luck.’”
“I don’t think I’m ever going to figure it out. The only way I can do is just come here, show up the best possible way I can prepare to it and just play golf.”
Potgieter, by the numbers
Players who are 21 years old are not often seen at the top of the PGA Championship leaderboard on Thursday — or any day for that matter.
That’s what makes Aldrich Potgieter such a fun storyline to follow at Aronimink.
The South African is off the course after shooting a 3-under 67, which is his career low at a major. Also worth noting: Potgieter is the second-youngest player to open the PGA Championship with 67 or better
And while we’re talking numbers and Potgieter: In case you were not aware he currently ranks No. 1 on Tour in driving distance (326.9).
He sits in a four-way tie with Ryo Hisatsune, Min Woo Lee and Stephan Jaegar in the clubhouse.

McIlroy bogeys his final four holes Thursday to shoot 4-over-par 74. Jon Rahm finished birdie-birdie to shoot 1-under 69. Jordan Spieth bogeyed two of his last three to also card a 69.
The lead is currently 3 under par.

It was his only birdie of the round, compared to five bogeys and one double. He’s currently T-113 at 6 over.
Four bogeys in five holes for McIlroy
McIlroy has gone bogey-birdie-bogey-bogey-bogey to drop to 3 over par. He has one hole remaining in his opening round.
Following a bogey at the par-4 seventh, his 16th hole of the day, Rahm chips in for birdie at the par-3 eighth. It’s Rahm’s first birdie of the round — he did hole out for eagle on the par-4 second — and he’s again at even par.
And … that’s a bogey for Spieth From the fairway and 119 yards out, Spieth bogeys the par-4 seventh, his 16th hole, after three-putting from 75 feet. He’s back to 2 under and one off the pace.

Garrick Higgo received a two-shot penalty to start his round for being late to the first tee. He still managed a 1-under 69 to sit two off the early lead.

Potgieter shoots 3-under 69
The South African holds the early clubhouse lead after six birdies and three bogeys. Forget his power, Potgieter picked up 5.143 strokes on the field with his putter.

Koepka, Spieth turn under par
After starting on the back nine, Brooks Koepka and Jordan Spieth both enter the front side at 1 under par. Rory McIlroy is even, Jon Rahm 1 over and Bryson DeChambeau 4 over.
