The UFC was in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Saturday for UFC 332. In the main event, the vacant women’s flyweight title was up for grabs as Natalia Silva took on Wang Cong.
Silva entered the fight with an 8-0 record in the UFC and was coming off a decision win over Rose Namajunas. Cong, meanwhile, was on a four-fight winning streak and was coming off a decision win over Tracy Cortez.
Ultimately, it was Silva who got her hand raised with a decision win over Cong, in a fight she did fade as the bout went on. But she did enough in the first three rounds to edge out the win. Following UFC 332, here is what I think should be next for the flyweight contenders.
Natalia Silva
Natalia Silva became the UFC’s flyweight champion with a hard-fought decision win over Wang Cong. Her striking looked great early on, but there are some questions about her cardio after she faded in the championship rounds.
Silva said she wants to be active and won’t wait for Valentina Shevchenko. So, her first title defense should be against former flyweight champion Alexa Grasso. Grasso is coming off back-to-back wins and beat Manon Fiorot last time out, which shoudl earn her the next title shot.
Wang Cong
Wang Cong had a chance to win the belt, but her slow start was the reason for the defeat. Cong had plenty of success in the championship rounds, so there is something to build on there. Cong’s size could pose a lot of problems for contenders.
After the loss, Cong is back to the drawing board; she still remains in the title picture. Cong should face Manon Fiorot as both need to get back into the win column. The loser will become a bit of a gatekeeper for a bit, while the winner could get a No. 1 contender fight.
