On This Day, Feb. 22: U.S. girls’s hockey wins 1st Olympic gold in 20 years

Feb. 22 (UPI) — On this date in historical past:

In 1819, a treaty with Spain ceded Florida to the US.

In 1855, Pennsylvania State College was based in State School, Pa. It was initially referred to as the Farmers’ Excessive College of Pennsylvania.

In 1862, Jefferson Davis was inaugurated as president of the Accomplice States of America.

In 1879, Woolworth, the primary chain retailer, opened in Utica, N.Y.

In 1959, the Daytona 500 was run for the primary time. Lee Petty won the race.

In 1973, Israeli fighter planes shot down a Libyan industrial airliner, killing 108 of the 113 individuals aboard. The army apparently believed the airliner was a safety risk in Israeli-controlled airspace. Israel’s protection minister later stated there was an “error in judgment” by the army. Israel paid reparations to the households of the victims.

In 1980, in probably the most dramatic upsets in Olympics historical past, the underdog U.S. hockey staff, made up of collegians and second-tier skilled gamers, defeated the defending champion Soviet staff, thought to be the world’s most interesting, 4-3, on the Winter Video games in Lake Placid, N.Y.

In 1987, artist Andy Warhol died of heart failure at age 58.

In 1998, a series of tornadoes raked central Florida, killing 42 individuals and injuring greater than 200 others.

In 2005, a powerful earthquake struck Iran, killing greater than 500 individuals.

In 2006, robbers took greater than $43 million in cash from the Securitas financial institution depot in Kent, England, Britain’s largest ever theft.

In 2011, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake severely broken Christchurch, New Zealand’s second largest metropolis, killing 185 individuals and injuring as much as 2,000.

In 2012, a commuter prepare plowed right into a barrier at a Buenos Aires station, killing 49 people and injuring hundreds extra.

In 2014, Ukraine’s Parliament ousted President Viktor Yanukovych following a interval of violence that killed scores of individuals.
