NBA commissioner Adam Silver believes that Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving is “very remorseful” for his sharing and promotion of an antisemitic documentary (and ensuing actions resulting in an eight-game suspension) in 2022, when he performed for the Brooklyn Nets.

“Completely,” Silver advised Sam Amick of The Athletic, when requested if he felt Irving was remorseful about sharing the movie.

“I believe in our personal conversations, which on the time included (former NBPA government director) Tamika Tremaglio … he was very remorseful. He took duty. I believe everyone knows he generally is a bit cussed, and I believe he felt strongly that he wanted to talk in his personal phrases by way of how he expressed himself by way of an apology to the general public.”

Silver additionally added: “There was little question for me — and I would not have mentioned what I did on the time if I did not really feel that he was completely remorseful and was dedicated to doing the fitting factor going ahead, and in addition to being empathetic to how others may need perceived his feedback.”

In October 2022, Irving (then a member of the Brooklyn Nets) shared a link on his Twitter account to a movie known as: “Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America,” a documentary “full of antisemitic tropes” and comprises “concepts in step with extra excessive factions of the Black Hebrew Israelites, which have an extended historical past of misogyny, homophobia, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and particularly antisemitism,” per Rolling Stone‘s Jon Blistein.

Irving defended his actions to reporters when requested about them following his group’s 116-109 win over the Indiana Pacers on Oct. 31, 2022.

“Did I do something unlawful? Did I harm anyone, did I hurt anyone? Am I going out and saying that I hate one particular group of individuals?” he said.

“It is on Amazon, a public platform, whether or not you wish to go watch it or not, is as much as you. There’s issues being posted day-after-day. I am no totally different than the following human being, so do not deal with me any totally different.”

Irving was finally suspended by the Nets for eight video games after he refused to say he had no antisemitic beliefs when confronted in regards to the scenario in a press conference with reporters in Nov. 2022.

He was reinstated three weeks later, and had this to say upon his return.

“I do not stand for something near hate speech or antisemitism or something that’s going towards the human race,” Irving advised reporters.

“I really feel like all of us ought to have a possibility to talk for ourselves when issues are assumed about us and I really feel it was vital for me to face on this place and take accountability for my actions, as a result of there was a approach I ought to have dealt with all this and as I look again and mirror once I had the chance to supply my deep regrets to anybody that felt threatened or felt harm by what I posted, that wasn’t my intent in any respect.”

Irving was traded to the Mavericks three months later. He’s now serving to lead the Western Convention champions within the NBA Finals towards the Boston Celtics, who maintain a 1-0 collection lead. Recreation 2 is about for Sunday at 8 p.m. ET.
