Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the next of the remakes, coming next winter

The series will be three parts in full

Today, we got our first look at the next entry in the Final Fantasy VII Remake series. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second of three planned entires, Square Enix confirmed today, and will arrive next winter for PS5.

The trailer closed out today’s Final Fantasy VII 25th Anniversary Celebration.  In it, we see Cloud walking around in an open area, soon joined by Sephiroth. The pair walk around a massive area, as questions circle around.

Cut-in text asks what will happen to the planet, and what Sephiroth’s endgame is. At one point, someone asks if she’s some kind of impostor. Then we see Zack and Cloud, walking towards Midgar, same as they were in the ending of Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Final Fantasy VII series producer Yoshinori Kitase confirmed in the presentation that the remake project will be composed of three parts: Final Fantasy VII RemakeFinal Fantasy VII Rebirth, and one last unannounced game.

You can (not) redo

The Final Fantasy VII team shared some messages on social media following the reveal. Creative director Tetsuya Nomura, director Naoki Hamaguchi, and producer Yoshinori Kitase all share some thoughts.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is being designed so that people can enjoy this game whether they know the original game or not,” writes Nomura. “In fact, new players might even enjoy starting their Final Fantasy VII journey with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Cloud and his friends embark on a new journey in this game, and I believe that the scenes they witness after leaving Midgar will give players a fresh, new experience.”

Nomura says he “can’t wait” to share the reason behind naming the entries Remake and Rebirth, as well as unveil the third title. He also says development has already started on the third entry.

“Making the middle part of a trilogy has its own challenges, but there are plenty of classic second installments in the world of film that are defined by stunning story twists and deeper explorations of their characters,” Kitase writes. “Often these second installments become a favorite amongst the fans. In the same vein, we are aiming to make Final Fantasy VII Rebirth an even more gripping and memorable experience than Final Fantasy VII Remake, so please wait a little longer while we finish up.”

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is targeting next winter for the PlayStation 5.
