Wang Cong didn’t walk out of UFC 332 with gold, and Dana White believes there will be regrets when the film is looked over.
Cong and Natalia Silva took center stage for the main event this past Saturday in Salt Lake City. It was the first time either fighter competed for UFC gold as the women’s flyweight title was vacated by Valentina Shevchenko. While there were some who felt Cong did enough to edge out the win, others believed she rallied a bit too late.
The judges were in agreement with the latter, as Silva walked away with the UFC Women’s Flyweight Championship via unanimous decision. Speaking to reporters during the UFC 332 post-fight press conference, White said he thinks Cong and her team will realize that the offense didn’t come soon enough.
“I think that when Wang goes back and watches the film, she’s going to hate herself,” White said. “I think if she stepped on the gas a little bit earlier, it would’ve been a completely different fight.”
Cong’s four-fight winning streak has come to an end, and this is her first loss since late 2024. How Cong responds after falling short in her bid to capture a UFC title will be a question mark going forward.
As for Silva, her unbeaten streak under the UFC banner continues. Silva hasn’t suffered a defeat since late 2017. The newly-minted 125-pound champion is on a 15-fight winning streak.
Silva has already been warned by Shevchenko not to get too comfortable. Shevchenko had to relinquish the women’s flyweight gold due to injury, but it’s clear she plans on recapturing the hardware once she’s cleared to compete again.
