2008. That was the last time the Houston Comets logo was seen in the WNBA. The Comets’ return to the W has been a long time coming for Houston basketball fans, and that dream took a $300 million step toward reality this past spring. In a bold move, Tilman Fertitta purchased the Connecticut Sun with a plan to move it to Texas and breathe new life into one of the WNBA’s original, defining dynasties.

Now, nearly two decades after the Comets’ exit, Houston fans can finally associate their team with its logo, as management unveiled the new design Thursday.

It was nostalgia meeting modern design. Sporting the iconic red, navy blue, and silver colorway, the new logo is not merely a copy of the legendary 1990s Comets gear. Instead, it offers a sleeker, reimagined aesthetic that honors the franchise’s historic roots while firmly pushing the visual identity into the future. Gretchen Sheirr, president of business operations for the Rockets and Comets, explained the thinking behind the process.

“We knew that we wanted to keep the tie to the history and the foundation that built this. We took the inspiration from the (original) secondary logo with the H that had the stars and the different iconic symbols through there. We modernized it,” said Gretchen Sheirr.

Winning four consecutive titles from 1997 to 2000, the Houston Comets were the WNBA’s first dynasty. They remain tied with the Minnesota Lynx and Seattle Storm for the most championships in league history.

Cynthia Cooper, who won four championships with the Comets, was also pleased to see the franchise’s new logo.

“The logo’s amazing,” said Cooper. “You can tell there’s a lot of thought and preparation that went into it. But really, the excitement is that logo is going to be on the chest of a new team coming back to Houston.”

Fans also wasted no time in expressing their thoughts on the new logo.

Fans Pleased to See The New Comets Logo

The wait may have been long for Houston fans, but judging by their reaction, much of the fan base seems to like the new logo and its design.

“Best team logo I saw in a min, got that classic feel to it,” one fan wrote on X.

“Love the colors.. love the H and the ball (comet). I just wish the lettering would have been a bit more emphasized.. like this,” another fan wrote, sharing a new logo with the name of the team in bold and all caps.

Some fans, however, wished the team had stuck with the past version.

“They should have went with the original 🤷🏾‍♂️,” one fan wrote.

The nostalgia surrounding the original Comets logo is undeniable, but WNBA regulations strictly forbid using a previous logo for a rebrand.

Forced to innovate, Houston’s creative brass, including senior creative director Jose Lopez and senior director of marketing operations Taylor French, faced a unique challenge. As they told USA TODAY Sports, the mission was to strike a delicate aesthetic balance: forging a fresh visual identity that pays profound homage to the 1990s while aggressively pushing the franchise into its modern era.

Still, some fans wanted the Comets’ rich history to be displayed more prominently.

“Looks good. I wish they would take the soccer route and have silver stars above the logo, showcasing how many championships the old team had,” one fan wrote.

One fan shifted focus from the logo to the team’s new era and how a top player, JuJu Watkins, awaits them next year.

“Juju in H-town bout to be crazy 🔥🔥,” another fan wrote.

With 329/1000 odds, Houston is a frontrunner for the number one pick in the 2027 draft lottery. And Houston fans have good reasons to be excited about landing the number one pick.

With the new logo in place, Houston is also positioning itself as a contender for the 2027 draft. And the prize at the top is the Trojans’ transcendent guard, JuJu Watkins. A talent who can effortlessly carve through the paint, finish through bruising transition contact, and casually drain contested triples.

After a standout sophomore season in which she averaged 23.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists to win AP Player of the Year, Watkins tore her ACL and missed 580 days. Having missed the entire 2025-26 season, Watkins officially returned to action last week in an exhibition game against California.

When the Comets make their highly anticipated return to the court in 2027, they’ll be doing so in the heart of downtown Houston. Sharing the Toyota Center floor with the Rockets, the reborn franchise is already laying the groundwork for a packed house, with season tickets for the upcoming W campaign officially on sale.
