The Octagon returned to the province of Alberta for tonight’s UFC Edmonton event, and four fighters wound up taking home performance bonuses.
The 13-bout televised fight card was headlined by a highly anticipated welterweight bout between Joaquin Buckley and Mike Malott. The contest proved to be a coming out party for the home country favorite in Mr. Malott. ‘Proper’ was able to get the better of Buckley in a seemingly close opening round before turning things up a notch in round two. After landing a number of good kicks and punches, Mike Malott through a kick that landed flush to the head of Joaquin Buckley and sent the American crashing to the canvas. After a follow up shot, ‘New Mansa’ was out cold and the referee quickly jumped in to stop the contest. It was a massive win for Malott who vaults into the promotion’s top ten at welterweight.
UFC Edmonton was co-headlined by a women’s flyweight tilt featuring Erin Blanchfield taking on Canadian standout Jasmine Jasudavicius. The bout resulted in an upset win for the underdog Canadian. Jasudavicius was able to smother Blanchfield on the ground for the majority of the opening two rounds, threatening the American with multiple submission attempts. Despite a strong third-round, Blanchfield’s late efforts were not enough to outweigh Jasmine’s strong start. ‘JJ’ won the fight on all three judges’ scorecards (29-28 x3).
