Chicago quarterback Caleb Williams grabbed headlines this week when he was announced as the cover star of the Madden NFL 27 video game. Williams’ appearance on the cover of the popular game with painted nails has continued to elicit widespread reactions from fans and analysts alike.

Cam Newton Addresses Divisive Caleb Williams’ Madden Cover

During a recent segment of the “4th and 1” podcast, former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Cam Newton addressed the issue of Williams donning nail polish on the cover of Madden.

“Nowadays, we have so many different examples of players expressing themselves by way of fashion, tattoos, and hairstyles,” Newton said. “It’s not for me to say who the hell does Caleb Williams think he is, more so than just respecting it? Times have changed… These kids are doing things that we would have never done.”

“It’s a whole evolution of what a person is bringing to the game, and you gotta respect it,” he continued. “You may not understand it, and I would challenge anybody, if you don’t understand it, ask the question, like, ‘What are you doing?’ Because the story behind it, maybe enlightening… It’s not just weird, it’s a message behind it, and I appreciate it.”

After the news of Williams’ Madden cover appearance was announced on Wednesday, polarizing rapper Boosie Badazz blasted the quarterback’s nail polish statement in a lengthy post on Instagram.

“FINGERNAILS PAINTED ON MADDEN. YOUNG BOYS LOOK UP TO YOU BRO SMH N THIS IS THE EXAMPLE U SET FOR THEM,” wrote Boosie. “U WANT RESPECT FROM YOUR TEAMMATES N YOUR HANDS LOOK LIKE THEY B***H NAILS AT HOME SMH WHO EVER THOUGHT U WOULD SEE THIS ON A MADDEN COVER. I FEEL SORRY FOR THESE KIDS.”

However, Williams’ former teammate, C.J. Garnder Johnson, clapped back at Boosie to defend the Bears quarterback.

In his second season in the NFL and first under coach Ben Johnson, Williams established himself as one of the most clutch quarterbacks in the league, leading the Bears to an 11-6 record and their first postseason win in 15 years.

Williams registered 3,942 passing yards on 58.1% completion, 27 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions, while adding 388 rushing yards and 3 scores for the Bears during the regular season, earning a PFSN QB Impact score of 75.9, ranking him at No. 20 in the league.
